Artist Talk and Active Listening Workshop

An introduction to deeper listening and field recording, plus Simon will present work, methods and equipment – which include digital recorders by Edirol and Zoom, an extremely directional Sennheiser microphone, a pair of Russian-made Oktava microphones, a small TRAM microphones for discreet recordings, contact microphones build by Jez riley French that detect sound through surfaces and an Aquarian hydrophone that records sounds under water.
Participants will go on a short walk while blindfolded, experiencing the sounds of the local area without visual distractions, to realise how complex the sound environment is.
Workshop tutor Simon Whetham has been capturing and composing with field recordings since taking part in a research trip to Iceland in 2005.
Since then he has been gaining a steadily increasing profile: exhibiting in Iceland; recording in the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil; performing at a large number of festivals and events, both nationally and internationally; having work accepted for release by specialist record labels; commissioned by Creative Labs to build a surround sound installation to demonstrate their equipment and software; producing radio works for Resonance FM, Overlap.org and Kunst Radio Austria; and invited to participate in two residencies at the Art Container in Tallinn, Estonia.
