disPLACE

Swap Meet commissioned Simon to install new work as part of the events they are running at the Big Chill this year.

disPLACE features three 'sound benches' where the listener, when seated, is transported to another time and place; a rainforest in Brazil , a swamp in Estonia , a marketplace in Thailand .

The recordings were captured by Simon during his travels over the last three years, and selected because of their evocative nature. Each piece will trigger some memory or sensation, even if you haven't visited the countries the recordings are of.

To hear the sounds of one location combining with the sounds of another creates an interesting new sonic environment, where one will be unable to distinguish if some of what they are hearing is not really there.

The listener will feel as if they are at some point between the two places – the real and the recorded – which also means they are between two points in time, the past and the present.
