Site-specific sound and light installation project for Redbase Foundation, Sewon, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

The solo exhibition was the result of a one month residency at Redbase, where Simon responded to the weather conditions and gallery by recreating a thunderstorm in the space.

Soon after arriving it became apparent that thunderstorms occurred almost daily and heavy rain would 'play' the tiled and metal roofs of the building. Also it would enter, dripping from the roof into the space.

Simon combined multichannel recordings of the rain on the roof with the sounds of water dripping into a collection of metal vessels and recreated thunder rumbles in a theatrical way, by using motors to vibrate large metal sheets suspended in the gallery. When the motor was actuated, light would also emanate from behind the sheets, as if there were lightning coming from them.
