I used a mechanism similar to this in my first kinetic device reappropriation project 'Made to Malfunction'. I added a plastic coated cable to the spinning CD holder and it struck an upright rod to make a sound.

When looking at how to use this device in this project, I realised the CD reader carriage  could be used to change the sound of the cable as it struck an upright rod. The CD reader moves back and forth, so the cable strikes it at different points, and also the distance is shorter so the strikes are more rapid the closer the CD reader comes to the spinning holder.

LED lamps have been utilised once again as they illustrate the point where the sound is being created, and the object looks more mysterious in the dark!
